June 23, 2020: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) invited the attention of the director general (DG) of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) to the need to promote import substitution items and innovative items to be manufactured in Pakistan with indigenous raw materials and sought help of the institution to enable SMEs avail the benefit of the Pakistan Innovation Fund ( PIF).

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver recalled many years ago when UNISAME team had visited PCSIR laboratories the scientist there had showed synthetic meat, milk and many other synthetic food items made by them for SMEs which were not commercially exploited due to lack of interest by the promoters.

Thaver said the SMEs are now particularly keen to make milk from rice, other things from peanuts like peanut butter and egg powder and whatever other items PCSIR could guide the SMEs to make from indigenous raw material as imports have become unaffordable.

The SME investors are also keen to make good cheese for the pizza makers under guidance from PCSIR.

UNISAME announced that one sauce maker has successfully made all imported sauces substitute in Pakistan.

Our aim is to find profitable projects for our SMEs, especially the upper medium entrepreneurs who are in a position to set up factories. We are getting offers from Chinese manufacturers for collaboration but when we can have expertise from home, why do we have to import technology said the union chief.

He requested the DG PCSIR to please consider the prospects and study how best they can work with the stakeholders to promote the SME sector.

UNISAME has institutional support from SMEDA and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) which is very much inclined to finance innovative projects.

In fact SBP has formed an SME Pakistan Forum and in its last meeting UNISAME advised them to include PCSIR as a member for integrated efforts to help the sector. Now with the Pakistan Innovation Fund, all could co-ordinate to give this a kick start.
