Tokyo’s Nikkei index ends flat while Hong Kong stocks end with slight loss

February 1, 2019: Tokyo’s benchmark Nikkei index ended flat on Friday as investors sought fresh trading clues and watched individual corporate earnings reports.

The Nikkei 225 index closed up just 0.07 percent or 14.90 points at 20,788.39, while the broader Topix index was down 0.18 percent or 2.86 points at 1,564.63.

Congruently, Hong Kong shares ended slightly lower Friday after a broadly positive week, though investors were cheered by positive comments from China and the US following their trade talks.

The Hang Seng Index inched down 11.73 points, to 27,930.74.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index jumped 1.30 percent, or 33.66 points, to 2,618.23, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, climbed 2.77 percent, or 35.25 points, to 1,309.99.
