May 26, 2021: Minister for Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan says rural development is vital to the sustainable socio-economic development and environmental viability of a country.

He said this during a consultative meeting with World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss ongoing projects and development priorities of the Government of Pakistan for the next years.

He highlighted that lack of economic opportunities and limited connectivity of rural areas with urban centers have caused the income gap between urban and rural residents.

In order to improve the rural economy, it was discussed to improve agriculture productivity through the provision of improved seeds and an efficient water management system.

Both sides also emphasized the need for improved rural infrastructure including farm-to-market roads.

The Country Director, World Bank appreciated the government’s ongoing reforms and development initiatives.

He also ensured the Bank's continuous support to the Government of Pakistan in achieving the priority development objectives.
