Progress and development of the country lies in the welfare of masses: Mamnoon Hussain

President Mamnoon Hussain said that Government has increased the budget of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) threefold which will lead towards the rapid empowerment and greater employment of women which is an effective and quick way to alleviate poverty.

The President said this while addressing the Launching Ceremony of National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER) of BISP in Islamabad on Thursday.

The President underscored that under this programme, BISP and other relevant organizations of the Government of Pakistan will be able to reach the destitute and marginalized segments of the society more easily and transparently. The efforts of the Government of Pakistan to alleviate poverty will be more meaningful and fruitful through such measures, he added. He stated that accurate data regarding prevalence of poverty would be collected under NSER so that people could be made the part of workforce according to their capabilities.

The President underlined that more than 60% of our population comprises of youth. Different avenues of development and progress open up for a country with such a youth bulge, he added. He emphasized that our top priority should be the immediate and effective attention on the education especially professional education of our younger generation.

He expressed pleasure that BISP administration is constantly striving under its dynamic leadership to meet the challenges and improve the effectiveness of this programme. In this backdrop, the process of completion of registration under NSER is really laudable, he said. He highlighted that it will not only help public sector organizations to carry the development process forward, but also facilitate civil society, national and international development partners to improve their performance.

He pointed out that this data will help to alleviate poverty by facilitating the establishment of an endowment fund, attracting the attention of corporate sector and promoting e-commerce.

The President stated that although the efforts of public and private sector organizations are laudable but community networking could prove even more beneficial in this regard. He stressed that women beneficiaries who have graduated out of this programme can play a vital role in this respect.

Establishment of the committees of such women is commendable because they can provide guidance to the others through their experiences in order to deal with this menace, he added. He hoped that these committees will be a source of widening the scope and enhancing the effectiveness of BISP and will lead the people living below the poverty line towards self-reliance and play their due role in national development process.

The President emphasized that progress and development of the country lies in the welfare of masses. He added that the Government desires participation of all citizens in these initiatives to the best of their capabilities.

BISP Chairperson Marvi Memon also addressed the ceremony. Federal Minister for Housing and Works Akram Khan Durrani and Federal Minister for Law Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk were also present on the occasion.
