May 25, 2021 (MLN): The overall power generation climbed by 25% YoY to 10,481-gigawatt-hours (GWh) during the month of April’21 compared to 8,391 GWh during Apr’20.

The upsurge in power production is mainly due to the low base and higher generation on gas amid suspension of gas to captive power plants.

As per a report by Arif Habib Limited, Hydel, RLNG, Coal, Gas, and Nuclear remained the major contributors of power generation during April’21 with the share of 25%, 25%, 23%, 12% and 10%, respectively. While the share of 2%, 1% and 0.7% from Wind, FO and Bagasse, also contributed to country’s total electricity respectively.

Cumulatively, during July-April FY21, the power generation reported an upsurge by 6.5% YoY to clock in at 102,852 GWh (14,097 MW) as compared to the corresponding period last year. The major contributors were Hydel and Coal during the period with the share of 30% and 22%, respectively. While power production through Gas and Wind-based generation saw a decline of 8% and 6%, YoY, respectively.

Simultaneously, the fuel cost for power generation jumped by 21% YoY to stand at Rs5.57/KWh during April’21, mainly attributable to the increment in coal-based cost of generation by 25% YoY to Rs8.01/KWh as coal prices increased by 49% YoY.

Furthermore, Gas-based and Nuclear-based costs of generation also surged by 17% YoY to Rs7.46/KWh and 10.8% YoY to Rs1.11/KWh, respectively. However, power production from Wind-based generation declined by 15% YoY.

The report further highlighted that during 10MFY21, fuel cost for power generation decreased by 5.8% YoY to an average of Rs4.61/KWh mainly due to rise in a hydel-based and nuclear-based generation.

Amid higher power generation, the total power consumption also witnessed an upsurge of 6.91% during July-April FY21 as compared to last year. This includes value addition effected by subsidies withdrawal, Minister of Energy, Hammad Azhar shared via his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

This is another sign of robust economic growth as energy consumption is a barometer for the state of the country’s economy.
