March 21, 2022 (MLN): Power generation increased by 11.1% YoY to 8,088 GWh during February 2022 compared to 7,281 GWh in February 2021, backed by the higher generation from hydel, nuclear, and coal, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) said on Sunday.

Cumulatively, during 8MFY22, power generation witnessed an upsurge of 9.4% YoY to 91,281 GWh against 83,407 GWh recorded in the corresponding period last calendar year.

During the month of February 2021 alone, coal, nuclear, FO, and wind based power generation went up by 34.7%, 28%, 6.8x, and 68.2% YoY, respectively. However, hydel, Re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), and bagasse-based generation declined by 27.5%, 3.5%, and 0.6% YoY, respectively.

Source wise, the share of coal in power generation was the largest in February 2022, as it accounted for 32% (2,564 GWh) of total electricity with a fuel cost of Rs13.1/KWh.

This was followed by hydel as around 18.2% (1,474 GWh) of electricity with a zero-fuel cost.

With a share of 15.2%, power generation from RLNG was 1,226 GWh at a rate of Rs14.3/KWh, whereas, nuclear contributed 12.5% (1,013 GWh) of electricity at a price of Rs1.1/KWh. Meanwhile, generation from gas-based powerplants was 918 GWh (11% of total generation) at a fuel cost of Rs8.2/ KWh.

Wind-based energy contributed about 2% or 165 GWh of electricity at zero cost, while 7% or 527 GWh contribution came from FO at a cost of Rs21.5/KWh. The bagasse and solar-based energy contributed about 1% (99 GWh) and 1% (58 GWh) of the electricity respectively during the month at a fuel cost of Rs6/KWh and Rs0/KWh respectively.

The imported electricity was stood at 34 GWh at the price of Rs15.7/KWh.
