Power distribution losses decline to 17.9 percent

The overall losses of all power distribution companies (DISCOs) stood at 17.9 per cent during year 2016-17.

Giving the details of losses of DISCOS, sources told APP here Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has 13.8 per cent losses, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) 10.2 per cent, Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) 10.6 per cent,  Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) 9 per cent, Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) 16.9 per cent, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) 32.6 per cent, Tribal Electric Supply Company (TESCO) 15.4 per cent, Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) 30.6 per cent, Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) 37.9 per cent and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) 23.1 per cent.

They said currently there were around 26.2 million electricity consumers, out of which 86 per cent were domestic, 11 per cent commercial and 1.3 per cent industrial consumers.

“Out of total generation about 86.11%, was being used by domestic consumers, 11.20 per cent by commercial , 1.30 per cent by industrial, 1.24 per cent by tube well and 0.06 percent for other purposes,” they said.

PESCO sustained line losses of Rs48 billion, MEPCO Rs30 billion, LESCO Rs34 billion, HESCO Rs19.69 billion and SEPCO Rs20.41 billion.

The sources said the incumbent government slightly succeeded to reduce the losses from 18.7 per cent to 17.9 per cent.

Up-gradation of transmission and distribution lines, setting up of new grid stations, mobile meter reading and amendment to the power theft act were some steps taken to further reduce the losses – APP
