PKR extends losing streak, ends at 153.46 against USD

May 20, 2021 (MLN): Pakistani Rupee (PKR) continued its losing streak and ended 23 paisa down against US Dollar (USD) at 153.46 on Thursday amid higher demand for the American currency.

On Wednesday, the home unit had closed at PKR 153.22 per USD.

The rupee endured a relatively dull trading session with very little intraday movement, trading in a range of 12 paisa per USD, showing an intraday high bid of 153.48 and an intraday Low offer of 153.42.

Within the Open Market, PKR was traded at 153/153.80 per USD.

So far in FY21, the local unit has logged by PKR 14.60 or 9.51% gain against the greenback while it appreciated by PKR 6.38 or 4.16% in CY21, as per data compiled by Mettis Global.

Alternatively, the currency gained 79 paisa against the Pound Sterling as the day's closing quote stood at PKR 216.56 per GBP, while the previous session closed at PKR 217.35 per GBP.

Similarly, PKR's value strengthened by 23 paisa against EUR which closed at PKR 187.02 at the interbank today.

On another note, within the money market, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) conducted an Open Market Operation in which it injected Rs.265.5 billion for 8 days at 7.06 percent.

The overnight repo rate towards the close of the session was 7.15/7.25 percent, whereas the 1-week rate was 7.05/7.10 percent.
