The Businessmen Panel of the FPCCI on Sunday asked the President FPCCI Zubair Tufail to resign immediately as he has lost moral authority to represent business community and get their issues resolved.

Now, President of the FPCCI cannot represent Pakistan at international forums due to criminal charges of tax theft framed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), it said.

In a statement issued here Sunday, Chairman of the Businessmen Panel Punjab Anjum Nisar and other leaders including Sheikh Aslam, Ahmed Jawad, Mian Usman, Khawaja Shahzeb Akram said that UBG leaders cheated the nation and business community by supporting a person with criminal record to become President FPCCI.

SM Muneer should be asked as to why he deceived the business community of the country as he knew about the criminal charges of tax evasion worth tens of millions against Mr. Tufail well before the annual elections of the Apex Chamber. This is a case of mass deception by the leadership of UBG which has not only spoiled the image of FPCCI but also damaged the confidence of local and international investors, they added.

The business leaders said that how can a person facing criminal cases of serious nature and a possible jail term can represent business community inside the country and stand for Pakistan on international forums. They said that Mr. Tufail will be unable to fight for the rights of the business community and hold meetings with important Government officials as his first preference would be to resolve personal issues to avoid sentence.

The incumbent president should resign and give charge to the senior vice president of FPCCI while the new Cabinet should look into the matter and tack action against SM Muneer and other leaders of the UBG, they demanded.

The call for resignation was also raised by The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday, when it asked the president FPCCI to immediately resign from his post as he can be arrested any time which will damage the image of FPCCI and the country.

NAB has filed a reference against President FPCCI Zubair Tufail, his son, brother and others for evading tax and the accused can be arrested anytime, it said.

SM Muneer, the leader of United Business Group should not prefer to support his blue-eyed over the interests of the country, said Kashid Ibbal Gondal, SVP, PEW.

In a statement issued here today, he said that the accused have been granted bail from a Sindh High Court bench comprising Justice Junaid Ghaffar and Justice Muhammad Humayoon but NAB is trying to get the bail cancelled.

In a recent meeting of the executive committee of the FPCCI, the leader of Businessman Panel Anjum Nisar and others have also demanded the immediate resignation of Zubair Tufail but their demand was ignored by the leaders of UBG.

The accused during 2010-12 imported PMC (Plastic Moulding Compound) commonly known as ‘plastic dana’ used for manufacturing plastic goods. They sold the consignments in open market and later claimed rebate which was seen as illegal by the authorities.

The NAB authorities investigated the case in detail and roped in the President FPCCI and his family members.

Mr. Gondal asked the government to initiate a detailed inquiry into the matter as the involvement of the representative of the business community of the country in tax theft is very shocking.
