Petroleum Division instructed to devise a plan to counter gas theft

During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s office yesterday, Imran Khan instructed the Petroleum Division to devise a comprehensive plan in order to monitor gas theft in the country.

According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s office, gas theft has been causing an annual loss of Rs.50 billion to the national exchequer.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, was attended by Minister for Petroleum Mr. Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Additional Secretary Incharge Petroleum Division Mian Asad Hayaud Din and senior government officers

The Prime Minister was briefed by Mian Asad Hayaud Din, regarding the current situation of demand and supply in the oil and gas sector.

He was also updated on the progress of construction and operationalization of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) and Pak-Iran gas pipeline, along with other significant projects which were in the pipeline to meet growing energy demands within the country.

The Secretary also highlighted various issues including the issue of rationalization of gas sale prices, recovery of receivables, non-implementation and frequent altering of that policies resulting in erosion of the investors’ confidence and non-awarding of exploration blocks during the last five years.

The Prime Minister directed that a comprehensive plan of action with defined timelines should be submitted at the earliest to address various issues of the oil and gas sector.
