Passenger car sales fall by 8.2% MoM in October

November 11, 2021 (MLN): The sale of passenger cars during the month of October 2021 was recorded at 17,413 units against a total production of 16,702 units, which is around 8.21% lower as compared to the 18,971 units sold in September 2021 and 45.14% higher as compared to October 2020, data from Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) showed Thursday.

However, the number of passenger cars sold in the country witnessed a massive growth of 70.87% YoY to 74,952 units during the first four months of the current fiscal year, thanks to the post-COVID-19 robust growth in the economy, duty and tax relief announced in the federal budget fiscal.

Going by the report, the maximum number of sales were made within the '1300 cc and Above' category at 8,619 units in the month of October 2021, down by around 2.09% MoM. This month, within this category, Toyota Corolla beat Honda Cars (Civic and City) as it recorded the highest sales at 3,341 units while later registered the sales of 2,651 units. This decline in sales of HCARs might be due to the closure of plant for few days, a research note by Sherman Securities highlighted.

This was followed by Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata and Suzuki Swift which sold 2,037, 312, 255 and 23 units, respectively.

The second-highest number of sales was made within the 'Below 1000cc' category at 6,163 units, up by 13.42% MoM and 72.5% YoY. In this segment, Suzuki Alto recorded the highest sales at 5,092 units, followed by Suzuki Bolan that sold 1,071 units in the month of October 2021.

On the other hand, the '1000 cc' category took a hit as its volumetric sales plunged by 44.42% MoM to clock in at 2,631 units in the month of October 2021. While the sales of 1000 cc vehicles increased by 30.6% YoY. Within this category, Suzuki Cultus recorded the highest sales at 1,340 units, followed by Suzuki WagonR which sold 1,291 units.

The total sale of Trucks during the month stood at 441 units, down by 5.36% MoM while up by 37.4% YoY. Isuzu emerged as the best-selling truck, with sales of around 222 units during the month, followed by MASTER with 134 units. HINO and JAC made sales of 72 units and 13 units, respectively.

On a cumulative basis, the total trucks sold during the first four months of FY22 were recorded at 2,011 units.

The overall sale of buses was recorded at 43 units, which signifies an increase of 4.88% MoM as compared to the previous month. Within this segment, MASTER made the maximum sales at 27 units while HINO and ISUZU recorded sales of 13 units and 3 units during the month of October 2021. During 4MFY22, the total sales of buses clocked in at 184 units.
