December 08, 2021 (MLN): The Government of Pakistan has decided not to participate in the Summit for Democracy being hosted by the United States, a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs showed.
“We value our partnership with the US which we wish to expand both bilaterally as well as in terms of regional and international cooperation. We remain in contact with the US on a range of issues and believe that we can engage on this subject at an opportune time in the future,” the press release read.
It further added that the government is thankful to the US for inviting Pakistan for participation in the Summit for Democracy, being held virtually on 9-10 December 2021.
The move hints at worsening ties between the two erstwhile partners in war on terror as relations between the two have worsened since US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
US President Joe Biden is yet to speak with Prime Minister Imran Khan since winning the presidential elections in 2020.
