Meeting reviews inception of five more power plants under Thar Coal Project

April 8, 2019: Sindh Minister for Energy, Imtiaz A Shaikh here on Monday chaired a meeting to review arrangements underway to build five different power plants, with generation capacity of 5500 mega-watts electricity, under Thar Energy Coal Project.

As per the envisaged scheme, scheduled to be completed by 2021, hefty investments were registered to be underway in the block one of Thar for coal fired power plants.

HUBCO, Siddiq Sons, Shanghai Electric Company, Thal Nova and Thar Energy have entered into detailed agreements with the provincial government for each of the plants in Thar.

The Minister assuring of all needed facilities, as per agreement between them and the provincial government, said NESPAK has been asked to provide details about essential provision of water for each of these plants.

Reiterating that Thar Coal project has been established to be absolutely feasible, Imtiaz A Shaikh particularly referred to successful completion of two separate coal power plants built by Engro Company, under the same Thar Energy Coal project.

Mentioning that each of two plants with the capacity to generate 330 mega-watts respectively are also contributing to the national grid, he said they are hence helpful in addressing the issue of power shortage to a considerable extent.

The provincial minister for energy assured the stakeholders for all required assistance and directed NESPAK officials to submit their reports so as to help meet water requirements of these plants.

The meeting among others was attended by Chairman, Planning and Development – Sindh, Muhammad Wasim, Sindh Secretary for Irrigation, Jamal Mustafa Syed along with representatives of NESPAK and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company.
