March 29, 2019: Senate Standing Committee on Statistics was informed on Friday that a team of International Monetary Fund is visiting Pakistan from April 01, to review the working and methodologies of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

“The team would remain in Pakistan for 12 days and would check and review the transparency in mechanism for procuring data in various sectors”, Secretary Statistics Shaista Sohail said while briefing the meeting.

The IMF team had visited two years ago for the same purpose and suggested some methodologies to improve the working and transparency of the Statistics Division which are being fully implemented.

The Secretary informed that there was no external influence on the working of the PBS, and it was fully autonomous and independent.

With respect to the announcement of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data, the secretary said that until now, the GDP data is being announced on annual basis, while from next year, the data would be given on quarterly basis.

Chairman of the committee Senator Dr. Jehanzeb Jamaldini said Statistics was an important division and directed to make it more efficient and progressive.

Briefing on the 6th population census held in 2017, the Secretary said only a minor difference between the provisional and final data has emerged and there are 68000 less people in final result than in the provisional result.
