May 26, 2022 (MLN): The upcoming General Elections 2023 will cost around Rs47.4 billion, witnessing a surge of Rs34bn within a decade.

As per the estimates available with MG News, Rs5.6bn will be spent on electronic voting machines (EVMs) and their related expenses while Rs4.3bn will be required for the printing of ballot papers.

Meanwhile, the ECP will also have to pay Rs15bn for security arrangements.

The notable jump in the cost of holding elections is attributed to the rise in inflation, increase in the number of voters, polling stations, and deployment of technology.

Province-wise, ECP will have to pay Rs9.5bn for elections in Punjab, Rs3.65bn for Sindh, Rs3.95bn in KPK, and Rs1.1bn to hold elections in Balochistan.

Previously, the ECP spent Rs31bn on the elections in 2018.
