Fertilizer offtake surges by 2x YoY in May

June 25, 2021 (MLN):  Total nutrient offtake during May 2021, was 386 thousand tonnes, which increased by 2.23 times YoY when compared to 173 thousand tonnes recorded in May 2020.

Nitrogen offtake was 293 thousand tonnes which represented an increase of 118.1 percent while Phosphate offtake was 90 thousand tonnes, showing an increase of 150.4 percent over May 2020. Potash offtake witnessed an increase of 26.5 percent over May 2020.

According to the National Fertilizer Development Centre (NFDC), the production of major fertilizer products during May 2021 was about 829 thousand tonnes. Urea production was 598 thousand tonnes (72.1 percent share in total production). Other products were; DAP 75 thousand tonnes, CAN 67 thousand tonnes, Nitrophos 74 thousand tonnes, SSP 6.7 thousand tonnes, NPK (various grades) 8 thousand tonnes and SOP 0.9 thousand tonnes. Total imported supplies were 114 thousand tonnes comprising of 93 thousand tonnes of DAP, 7.7 thousand tonnes of MOP, 3.6 thousand tonnes of SOP, 0.3 thousand tonnes of MAP and 9 thousand tonnes of AS.

Cumulatively, the total nutrient offtake during the first two months of Kharif 2021 (April-May) was 626 thousand nutrients tonnes, which showed an upward trend of 42.2 percent over the same timeframe of Kharif 2020. Nitrogen offtake increased by 573 percent Phosphate offtake also increased by 5.5 percent while potash offtake increased by 31.9 percent respectively.
