Total energy generated during July 2018, the first month of the new financial year, has jumped to 13,397 GWh, up from 12,117 GWh generated in the month before that. Overall, electricity generation in July has increased by 10.5% over the previous month.

According to the information provided by the Central Power Purchasing Agency, a total of 3,891 GWh were generated from hydro sources of power generation in that month. This is an improvement over the previous month since during June, Hydel sources accounted for 3,589 GWh of the power generated.

During July 2018, hydel generation accounted for 28.30% of the total electricity generated for the national grid, compared to a 27.79% share in June. This is a significant improvement in its share of contribution as Hydel power generation accounted for only 18.3% of the electricity generated in May 2018 when it generated energy of about 2,217 GWh.

Generation from RFO based power plants has slightly improved with total generation from this source accounting for 1,283 GWh, compared to 1,165 GWh in June. This source of energy has however witnessed a declining share in total power generation as it accounts for 9.34% of the total power generated, compared to 19.3% in May 2018. Total generation from RFO plants was recorded at 1,162.5 GWh in June compared to 2,338.23 GWh in May 2018.

Coal based power plants have similarly witnessed increased power generation as they contributed 1,736 GWh to the national grid, a share of 12.63% in total power generation in July. During June, that share stood at 11.79% as power generation from coal had accounted for 1,522 GWh, and 1,468 GWh in May.

Generation from gas based power plants remained around the same level as last month as a total of 2045 GWh were generated through these sources, compared to 2,026 GWh in June and 1,971 GWh in May. Consequently, its share in power generation has reduced to 14.87%, compared to a share of 15.69% in June, and 16.27% in May.

RLNG plants, another significant contributor to our power generation, recorded an increase in power generation, contributing 3,370 GWh to the grid, compared to 3,252 GWh in June 2018, and 2,890.17 GWh produced in May. Its share in power generation has however declined marginally to 24.51% compared to 25.18% in June but still above the 23.85% share in May.
