Country’s tapped hydel potential stands at 9,406 MW

June 2, 2019 (MLN): Pakistan has tapped 9,406 MW hydel generation so far against identified potential of 60,158 MW.

Official sources told that,” the country's total hydel potential is 100,000 MW while only 9,406 MW has already been tapped”.

The Indus corridor has highest potential with 81 per cent followed by Jhelum corridor with 16 per cent and Chitral, Swat and Kabul corridor with three per cent, they added.

They said that earlier country's total installed capacity was 6,919 MW. However, additional 2487 MW has been added to the national grid system during last one year, they said.

They said Tarbela 4th extension 1410 MW, 969 MW Neelum Jhelum and 108 MW Golen Gol have been added to the system during the said period.

More projects including Kurram Tangi (83.4 MW), Keyal Khawar (128 MW), Dasu (4320 MW), Diamer Bhasha dam (4500 MW) and Mohmand dam (800 MW) were under construction phase.

Similarly, some six projects including Patan (2400 MW), Thakot (4000 MW), Phandar (80 MW), Basho (40 MW) hydrpower powers, Lower Palas Valley (665 MW) and Lower Spat Gah (496 MW) were under final planning stages.
