Commercial Banks lead the losses on KSE 100 on disappointing earnings

The 100 Index shed 479 points today to conclude the session at 42,330 points, a percentage decline of 1.12% from yesterday’s closing value.

The initial hours of trading had observed a sluggish market where uncertainty prevailed amongst investors, ahead of earnings announcement from two major banks, namely HBL and UBL. However, as a result of poor earnings, bears dominated the end game for the session today.

The index moved within a bracket of 689 points as the intraday high for the index reached 42,976 points while the intraday low was recorded at 42,286 points. A total of 170 million shares were traded for the companies constituting the 100 index, at a market value of PKR 9.2 billion.

Sector-wise, Power Generation & Distribution companies performed the best among the KSE – 100 companies, contributing a net figure of about 50 points to the index. Commercial Banks, Cement and Oil & gas Exploration Companies on the other hand steered the index towards a loss yet again as the three sectors alone, collectively took a sum of 407 points from the index.

Both the banks reported a close to 50% decline in profits over the year, resulting in losses for the banking sector.

Among the scripts listed at KSE – 100 Index, 32 companies advanced, 66 declined, while only one company remained unchanged from its previous closing with the remaining one not traded at all.

The broader KSE All Share Index lost 339 points to close the session at 30,715 points. The intraday high peaked at 31,131 points and the intraday low was recorded at 30,679.

A total of 284.5 million shares were traded at KSE today at a value worth PKR 11.37 billion.

Chemicals led the sector turnover at the Karachi Stock Exchange today, as the companies within the sector collectively witnessed trading activity of 50.9 million shares.

Out of all companies that listed at KSE, 115 companies advanced during the day, while 201 companies declined with 16 remaining unchanged from its previous closing by the day end.
