Closing Bell: Reversal of Fortune

June 17, 2020 (MLN): A highly volatile trading was witnessed at Pakistan stock exchange today. The benchmark KSE -100 Index started session on a positive note and surged more than 350 points in early trading but lost momentum gradually in last trading hours due to selling pressure amid political instability.

According to the closing note by Ismail Iqbal Securities, the market reversed gains during the last trading hours as news came in regarding BNP-M withdrawal from PTI coalition which intensified the selling in the market.

Consequently, the benchmark KSE-100 Index lost 170 points to settle at 33,849 level, down by 0.5% compared to the previous close.

The Index traded in a range of 620.69 points or 1.82 percent of previous close, showing an intraday high of 34,396.45 and a low of 33,775.76.

Of the 95 traded companies in the KSE100 Index 35 closed up 56 closed down, while 4 remained unchanged. Total volume traded for the index was 144.16 million shares.

Sector wise, the index was let down by Commercial Banks with 76 points, Cement with 50 points, Fertilizer with 42 points, Oil & Gas Marketing Companies with 15 points and Technology & Communication with 9 points.

The most points taken off the index was by MCB which stripped the index of 42 points followed by ENGRO with 26 points, UBL with 25 points, FFC with 17 points and HBL with 15 points.

Sectors propping up the index were Food & Personal Care Products with 11 points, Tobacco with 8 points, Inv. Banks / Inv. Cos. / Securities Cos. with 6 points, Power Generation & Distribution with 6 points and Insurance with 5 points.

The most points added to the index was by NESTLE which contributed 10 points followed by HUBC with 10 points, OGDC with 10 points, SEARL with 9 points and PMPK with 8 points.

All Share Volume increased by 122.93 Million to 340.86 Million Shares. Market Cap decreased by Rs.9.10 Billion.

Total companies traded were 379 compared to 375 from the previous session. Of the scrips traded 135 closed up, 219 closed down while 25 remained unchanged.

Total trades increased by 32,574 to 125,988.

Value Traded increased by 3.59 Billion to Rs.10.11 Billion
