Closing Bell: Dull activity on trading floors

Jul 30, 2019 (MLN): The domestic equity market witnessed lackluster activity throughout today amid lack of positive triggers and ongoing concerns regarding upcoming earnings announcements which forced the investors to remain at the sidelines.

In addition, the market participants’ sentiments remained weak as they await inflation data for the month of June that might set the tone of next MPS, revealed in a closing note by Aba Ali Habib Securities Limited.

The equity market opened the session on a negative note wherein it went as low as 31,485 points which accounts for a 41-month low.  However, at the end of trading, the benchmark KSE-100 Index narrowed  the losses by landing in consolidation after shedding 76.11 points or 0.24 percent decline to close at 31,658.12 points.

The Index traded in a range of 289.14 points or 0.91 percent of previous close, showing an intraday high of 31,775.00 and a low of 31,485.86.

Of the 89 traded companies in the KSE100 Index 47 closed up 38 closed down, while 4 remained unchanged. Total volume traded for the index was 40.95 million shares.

Sector wise, the index was let down by Commercial Banks with 41 points, Tobacco with 27 points, Cement with 17 points, Oil & Gas Exploration Companies with 13 points and Food & Personal Care Products with 12 points.

The most points taken off the index was by PAKT which stripped the index of 27 points followed by HBL with 21 points, PPL with 19 points, OGDC with 18 points and NESTLE with 13 points.

Sectors propping up the index were Pharmaceuticals with 12 points, Fertilizer with 9 points, Oil & Gas Marketing Companies with 9 points, Insurance with 4 points and Inv. Banks / Inv. Cos. / Securities Cos. with 4 points.

The most points added to the index was by POL which contributed 18 points followed by ENGRO with 12 points, BAFL with 8 points, ABOT with 7 points and MARI with 7 points.

All Share Volume increased by 5.50 Million to 51.29 Million Shares. Market Cap decreased by Rs.44.75 Billion.

Total companies traded were 314 compared to 326 from the previous session. Of the scrips traded 160 closed up, 134 closed down while 20 remained unchanged.

Total trades increased by 6,897 to 26,397.

Value Traded increased by 0.60 Billion to Rs.2.11 Billion
