Automobile companies sell 3,800 units of passenger cars during May as production resumes

June 10, 2020 (MLN): The sale of passenger cars during the month of May, 2020 stood at 3,800 units against an overall production of 656 units, which is around 75.4 percent lower than the sales recorded in the same month of the previous year.

While the majority of automobile companies, including Indus Motor Company and Atlas Honda, successfully resumed plant operations after receiving directions from their respective provincial governments, Pak Suzuki Motors kept its plant shut which resulted in nil production by the company.

According to a monthly report released by Pakistan Automotive Manufacturer's Association (PAMA), the overall sales during 11MFY20 were recorded at 89,130 units, which is around 53.8 percent lower as compared to the 192,863 units sold in the corresponding period of last year.

The maximum number of sales were made within the '1300cc and Above' category at 802 units. Within this category, Toyota Corolla recorded the highest sales at 294 units, followed by Honda Cars (Civic & City) and Suzuki Swift that sold 263 and 78 units respectively. The newly launched Toyota Yaris also saw sales of 167 units against the production of 389 units.

The second-highest number of sales were made within the '1000 cc' category at 1,308 units. Within this category, Suzuki Cultus recorded the highest sales at 922 units, followed by Suzuki WagonR that sold 386 units.

On the contrary, the 'Below 1000cc' category witnessed a sale of 1,690 units during the month. wherein Suzuki Alto recorded the highest sales at 1,304 units, followed by Suzuki Bolan and Suzuki Mehran that sold 386 and units respectively.

The total number of trucks sold during the month stood at 76 units, which translates into an increase of 111.1 percent as compared to the previous month, and a decline of 79.3 percent as compared to the same month of the previous year. This resulted in a cumulative sale of 2,845 units during the first 11 months of the ongoing fiscal year, showing a drop of 48.2 percent as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Isuzu emerged as the best-selling truck, with sales of around 56 units during the month and 1,423 units during 11MFY20. Master followed the lead with sales of 9 units and 376 units during the respective periods.

Likewise, the total sales of buses made during the ongoing fiscal year totaled 535 units, which is around 38 percent lower than the previous year.

Tractors sales declined by 9.1 percent on a monthly basis as 1,849 units were sold during May, 2020 as compared with 2,035 units sold in April, 2020.
