Auto sector: Passenger car sales plunge by 11% MoM in June

July 13, 2021 (MLN): The sale of passenger cars during the month of June 2021 was recorded at 11,569 units against a total production of 18,154 units, which is around 11% lower as compared to the 12,934 units sold in May 2021 and 58% higher as compared to June 2020. The decline in sales on a sequential basis is attributable to anticipation of decline in car prices and new auto policy.

This brought the cumulative sales for FY21 at 151,182 units, which is higher by 57% as compared to the same period of last year.

According to a monthly report released by Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), the maximum number of sales were made within the '1300 cc and Above' category at 7.042 units, up by around 28% MoM and 74% YoY. Within this category, Honda Cars (Civics and City) recorded the highest sales at 2,826 units, followed by Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra and Suzuki Swift which sold 1,876, 1,862, 270 and 208 units, respectively.

The second-highest number of sales was made within the '1000cc' category at 3,124 units. Within this category, Suzuki Cultus recorded the highest sales at 2,270 units, followed by Suzuki WagonR which sold 854 units.

On the contrary, the ' Below 1000 cc' category witnessed a meager sale of 1,403 units during the month compared to 4,139 units recorded in the previous month. In this segment, Suzuki Alto recorded the highest sales at 1,216 units, followed by Suzuki Mehran that sold 187 units.

The total sale of Trucks during the month stood at 352 units, down by 2% MoM. Isuzu emerged as the best-selling truck, with sales of around 191 units during the month, with MASTER following the lead with sales of 103 units. HINO and JAC made sales of 37 units and 21 units, respectively.

The overall sale of buses was recorded at 53 units, which signifies a decrease of 56% as compared to the previous month. Within this segment, Master made the maximum sales at 27 units, while Hino recorded the sales of 12 units during the month of June 2021.

Cumulatively, total sales of Truck and Buses during the month clocked in at 405 units against the production of 653 units. The sales were surged by 3% MoM and 52% YoY.
