Agri targets set for Rabi 2022-23

October 14, 2022 (MLN): The above-average rains have affected the production of Kharif crops across the country and outlook for Rabi crops, the Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) said in a meeting held on Thursday.

Rains and floods caused heavy damages to agriculture sector as all crops, especially in Sindh and Balochistan were damaged very badly. The situation affected production of Kharif crops 2022-23 and production plan for 2022-23 Rabi Crops.

Due to this the prices of all essential food items had reached at the highest level. To cater this worst situation of unavailability of essential food items in local markets this Ministry with M/o Commerce took up the matter and facilitate the import of essential food items on fast-track basis to maintain the supply at reasonable prices to consumers.

The FCA discussed situation of inputs for 2022-23 Rabi Crops.

The committee was informed that sugarcane production for 2022-23 is estimated at 81.64 million tons from an area of 1.32mn hectares showing an increase of 12.44% and 6.23% in area and production respectively over the targets fixed by FCA.

Rice production for 2022-23 is estimated at 5.53mn tons from an area of 2.99mn hectares showing a decrease of 2.4% and 34.51% in area and production respectively over the targets.

Maize production for 2022-23 is estimated at 9.24mn tons from an area of 1.61mn hectares showing an increase of 21.02% and 28.86% over the targets.

Mung bean production for 2022-23 is estimated at 183.7 thousand tons from an area of 213.2 thousand hectares showing an increase of 12.58% and 2.29 % in area and production respectively over the last targets.

Furthermore, the FCA was informed that Cotton production for 2022-23 is estimated at 6.3mn bales from an area of 2.1mn hectares showing a decrease of 43.08% in production over the last year.

Production achievements of major and minor crops like wheat, Mash, Gram, Potato, Lentil, Onion, Tomato, and chilies were also discussed in the meeting.

The FCA also fixed production targets for Rabi 2022-23; wheat at 28.4mn tons on an area of 9.3mn hectares whereas targets for Gram, Potato, Onion, and Tomato were fixed 560, 6,029, 2,422 and 622 thousand tons respectively.

On seed availability for Rabi crops, the committee was informed that certified seed availability for Rabi Crops increased by 14% as compared to the last year.

On water, IRSA Advisory Committee anticipated a shortfall of 18% whereas provinces have been allocated 30.25MaF of water.

The committee was informed that the prevailing weather conditions are supportive, and shortage is manageable. Weather outlook for the period October – December 2022 suggest that the amount of rainfall is likely to below normal over the country.
