A look at monthly average prices within CPI basket

October 04, 2018 (MLN): Among the 53 essential items enlisted in the CPI basket, and monitored on a regular basis, the average price of Kerosene oil during September 2018 has recorded the largest hike as compared to average price during the corresponding period of last year.  

On the other hand, the heaviest price drop has been recorded for onions on a year-on-year basis, as per the data released by PBS on CPI inflation.

For the month of September 2018, the average price of Kerosene oil in the country shot up from Rs.78.88 per liter to Rs.121.36 per liter, YoY. Following right after in terms of percentage increase, the average prices of Hi Speed Diesel (HSD) have expanded from Rs.78.27 per liter during September 2017 to Rs.107.56, up by 37%.

In addition to this, the average prices of standard 11 kg LPG Cylinders have gone up by 33.47%, while Petrol, Super went up by 30%, YoY, to Rs.93.88 per liter. Additional items that recorded a price hike comprise Loose Red Chili Powder, Cooked Beef at an average hotel and women’s’ sandals.

On the contrary, items having experienced the most significant deflation in prices include, Onions with a drop of 48% (at Rs.38 per KG), Garlic having fallen by 34% (at Rs.122.91 per kg) and Tomatoes slipping down from Rs.102.62 per KG to Rs.72.46 per KG, YoY.

Other items that recorded price cut during the year include Potatoes and Pulse Mash, Washed.
