Transporters threaten nationwide strike over fuel price hike

July 29, 2026 (MLN): Goods transport associations across Pakistan have warned of a countrywide strike unless the government addresses their concerns over the latest surge in petroleum prices, with freight charges being raised by 15% in the meantime.

The decision emerged from an emergency meeting of petroleum and goods transport associations held to discuss the impact of repeated fuel price hikes on the transport sector.

Association president Malik Shehzad Awan said the relentless rise in fuel costs had made it untenable for transporters to sustain operations at existing freight rates, prompting the 15% increase with immediate effect, according to media reports.

He cautioned that should the government's response prove unsatisfactory, the associations would move to declare a nationwide strike within one to two days.

Transport bodies from across the country, he added, stood ready to join the strike action should the matter remain unresolved.
