August 19, 2026 (MLN): The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement could lay the groundwork for a wider regional security framework, with its potential expansion to other countries offering a pathway towards enhanced peace and stability, experts observed on Wednesday.

The views were expressed during a roundtable titled “The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement and the Emerging Regional Security Architecture,” hosted by the Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI).

The discussion brought together former diplomats, academics, security experts and practitioners to examine the implications of the recently concluded Makkah Joint Defence Pact, its potential influence on the regional security environment, and Pakistan’s emerging role in shaping regional security arrangements, according to APP.

Participants described the agreement as an initial move towards establishing a broader regional security architecture.

They noted that the framework could be strengthened through the future participation of additional states, potentially contributing to greater regional peace and stability.

The participants also highlighted the defensive character of the agreement, stressing that it was not directed against any particular country.
